Alan Stein Recap

Alan Stein, noted basketball trainer and fitness professional, joined the University of Maryland Sports Business Society at the College Park campus on March 1. Stein shared with a group of 30 college students his keys to being a successful entrepreneur, specifically in the sports industry. Stein is currently serving s the head athletic trainer at Damatha Catholic High School in addition to being the founder at Stronger Team, the lead performance coach for the Nike Basketball Academy and the co-host of the Hardwood Hustle Basketball Podcast. In Stein’s 15-plus years working in the basketball world, he has had the opportunity to train NBA greats like Lebron James, Kevin Durant and Kobe Bryant.

Stein played basketball the majority of his life but, despite earning a college scholarship, he knew that his chance of playing at a professional level were slim. HE wanted to stay involved in the game so he turned his focus to fitness and training. Despite working with athletes at all levels, Stein says that he favorite group to work with is children and teenagers because their success, “isn’t defined by wins and losses.”

When it comes to being successful in business, and in other ventures, Stein says that the best advice he can give is to, “find what you’re most passionate about and find what you’re best at and then find where those two things intersect.” Stein also states that those who develop the positive habits that 99 percent of people don’t have will be the most successful – the one percent club, as he likes to call it.

Stein also stressed that no opportunity presented itself by chance, it has always been the result of hard work and adds that, “There’s a lot of thinks in life that you don’t have control over, but your preparation is the once thing that you can always control.”

Stein advises all young entrepreneurs to be open-minded and try and take every opportunity and turn it into more opportunities.

“You need to define your own success, you can’t let anyone else define it.”
