Jordan Looby Recap
On Monday, October 3, the University of Maryland Sports Business Society, along with terpAMA, hosted Jordan Looby, newly appointed Assistant Director for Marketing Strategy & Fan Experience with UMD Athletics. Looby talked about how he got his start in marketing, what he does in his role with UMD Athletics, as well as what people can do to get into the marketing industry.
Looby attended Rutgers University, where he received a BS in Management & Global Business. He also attended Georgetown University, where he received a master's in Sports Industry Management. While at Rutgers, Looby served as manager of the football team. 5 years ago, he got an internship with the Maryland Athletic Department and has since been working there.
On game days, Looby works with DJs and the band, directing the fan experience. After the season ends, he works on the marketing strategy for generating revenue from ticket sales, which he described as a year-round process. In addition, the marketing team meets and sets their branding strategy for the upcoming year. "The biggest part of our revenue and the most important part of our revenue is our season ticket holder base," Looby said.
For people interested in getting into the marketing industry, Looby emphasized the importance of networking and branding yourself. He mentioned a national conference that school marketing teams attend and how Maryland often collaborates with other school's marketing programs. He also urged getting involved in something as early as possible and taking the initiative. "Marketing is so broad," Looby said. "You can know marketing through and through but it's very different depending on the industry."
